Although they are re-used from WRC 6, it's hard to even recognize them due to the amount of detail added this time, plus they are much narrower and more bumpy.
It was a bit of a letdown to see that the epic stages are just the sum of the shorter stages, but at least sometimes they are reversed. I did the Monte Carlo epic stage and it was Flying down the straights, through tunnels, snaking through the hairpins, the junctions, the constant change from tarmac to snow and back to tarmac. It's an incredible experience, and the car handling compliments nicely. The stage ambiance is excellent in each rally and there are lots of famous landmarks and jumps and turns that can be recognized.
Sounds continue to be average but they do their job. On my 7. Replay angles still suck but at least that retarded camera that stares at the front bumper is gone. Force feedback with the G29 is decent. It's nothing special but does what it has to do: communicate what the car is doing. Pad feeling is great, the best I have felt in a rally game this generation, but both pad and wheel need tweaking in the setup menu: both are way too twitchy out of the box. On the G29 lowering the steering sensitivity helps a lot.
And you can adjust on the fly in the pause menu while racing so no need to go back to the main menu. Graphics are good. With the game being locked at 30fps I think they could have been better, but they do the job just fine. I would have appreciated HDR. I would have given a score of 9 if it weren't for the 30fps. That's inexcusable and the only big fault the game has. However, it is locked at 30 and doesn't go down from there from what I've seen.
I prefer that to a target of 60fps with constant drops and slowdown. Screen tearing has been completely eliminated in WRC 7. Draw distance is practically infinite.
Very little popup. The light modeling is fantastic. Dawn and dusk look especially nice. A huge leap forward from 6 but still room for improvement. I tend to be less sensitive to this than many others, so keep that in mind.
Multiplayer is fun and it's nice to see local split screen and Hotseat mode, which is an absolute blast with friends. You can also make a custom rally season and choose various stages over three days. Nice thing to have if you think the career rallies are too short. AI speed on Hard and Hardcore are very challenging so even the fastest drivers will have fun racing in single player.
Highly recommended. Racing game surprise of the year and does a great job of giving you that on-the-limit immersive feeling. I usually find user scores to be a better indicator of critic scores but in this case I was wrong. The quality of the visual environment, the I usually find user scores to be a better indicator of critic scores but in this case I was wrong.
The quality of the visual environment, the car and the sound effects are good. The settings offer decent customisation for a rookie like me. The actual components that make the game is some what lacking. The behaviour of the car, the obstacles, the bumps, trenches in the road makes the game very frustrating. I thought GT was unforgiving, this game is worse. Unless you have talent it its going to be a real struggle to play.
Otherwise the best option for those who want to test themselves against others is via the leaderboards and the challenge mode, which picks a car and track combo and challenges you to put down your best time compared to others.
The difference between this and the standard leaderboards being that you potentially earn the most points for your first attempt, and fewer points for each subsequent shot you take. From the densely lined, snowy forest roads of Sweden to the rocky, sun-drenched gravel of Argentina, each of the different locales and stages has a real feeling of character that, while proving an incredible challenge, also serves to visually satisfy.
Special stages are deeply packed with foliage, adding a quality and detail to the environment seldom seen in other rally games. While not quite as awe-inspiring as the numerous locales you plow through, each of the game's 55 different team cars have all been modeled to accurately reflect their real-life counterparts. Slightly less spectacular are the cockpit interiors which, while matching the bare-bones structure of a beastly rally car, fail to live up to the finer level of environmental detail.
Similarly, weather effects are present but unspectacular, particularly when driving in snow, which never manages to stick to your windshield.
If you do well enough, you might be given an early shot for a single rally at a team in one of the higher tier championships.
Better yet, earn a good finishing spot in the championship and rival teams from the other categories will swoop in and attempt to sign you up for next season. Your performance can change your team's morale, which affects how efficiently they perform car repairs in the service area at the end of each day. Team morale is also affected by how well you match their preferred approach to racing: some want you to go all-out, pushing hard to go as fast as possible without too much cause for concern about damage.
